NetWrite: A New Breed of Communication
Amy Paterson
Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management , 2010, DOI: 10.5931/djim.v6i1.36
Abstract: This paper examines the recent linguistic phenomena of texting and instant messaging, paying particular attention to the unique linguistic properties exhibited in digital communications. Through an examination of the use and influence of TextSpeak, I conclude that its demonstrated linguistic patterns are unique in conforming to a written standard, rather than the verbal conventions of other languages. Based on these conclusions, I recommend that this new language—here dubbed NetWrite—should be studied on its own unique terms rather than by its effect (or lack thereof) on traditional English.
Repeatability of vascular responsiveness measures derived from near‐infrared spectroscopy

Abstract: Near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)‐derived measures of tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) have been recently shown to significantly correlate with the widely used method for noninvasively assessing vascular endothelial function, flow‐mediated dilation (FMD). The purpose of this study was to examine the intraday and interday reliability of the reperfusion slope of StO2 (slope 2 StO2) and compare it to FMD. Ultrasound‐derived FMD was quantified following 5 min of distal cuff occlusion of the popliteal artery in nine healthy young men (26 ± 3 years). An FMD test was performed each of 4 days, with a fifth involving three tests. FMD was calculated as the greatest percent change in diameter from baseline (%FMD). StO2 was measured using NIRS throughout each test, with slope 2 StO2 being calculated as the upslope of 10‐sec following cuff release. Reliability was determined using repeatability, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and coefficient of variation (CV). Repeatability of slope 2 StO2 was better than %FMD for both intraday (0.43 and 5.65, respectively) and interday (0.48 and 4.82, respectively) comparisons; approximately 30% of mean values for slope 2 StO2 could be attributed to measurement error, whereas 100% of mean FMD could be for both intraday and interday comparisons. Similarly, ICC and CV values indicated stronger reliability of slope 2 StO2 compared to %FMD for both intraday (ICC 0.92 and 0.36, respectively; CV 9 ± 4% and 44 ± 24%, respectively) and interday (ICC 0.94 and 0.25, respectively; CV 14 ± 5% and 40 ± 22%, respectively) comparisons. In conclusion, NIRS‐derived slope 2 StO2 can be used as a reliable measure of vascular reactivity
Tychonoff's theorem for locally compact space and an elementary approach to the topology of path spaces

Mathematics , 2007,
Abstract: The path spaces of a directed graph play an important role in the study of graph $\css$. These are topological spaces that were originally constructed using groupoid and inverse semigroup techniques. In this paper, we develop a simple, purely topological, approach to this construction, based on Tychonoff's theorem. In fact, the approach is shown to work even for higher dimensional graphs satisfying the finitely aligned condition, and we construct the groupoid of the graph. Motivated by these path space results, we prove a Tychonoff theorem for an infinite, countable product of locally compact spaces. The main idea is to include certain finite products of the spaces along with the infinite product. We show that the topology is, in a reasonable sense, a pointwise topology.
Potentially life-threatening intravenous acetaminophen overdose in a 3-month-old (40 weeks’ post-menstrual age), 2.3 kg baby girl  [PDF]

Abstract:

A case is presented of a serious, potentially life-threatening intravenous acetaminophen overdose in a 3-month-old (40 weeks’ post menstrual age),2.3 kgbaby girl. The neonate was scheduled for urgent laser therapy for retinopathy of prematurity. Instead of an intended intravenous Hartmann’s solution bolus of 10 ml·kgˉ1, the neonate received a 17 ml bolus of correctly labelled intravenous 1% acetaminophen. The National Poisons Bureau was immediately contacted for advice and in the absence of data suggested a treatment with N-acetylcysteine for a 24-hour period. Baseline blood samples for clotting, liver function, urea and electrolytes, full blood count and plasma acetaminophen concentration were taken 30 min, 8.25 h, 12.5 h, 18.5 h and 120 h after the overdose. Acetaminophen concentration was 78 mg·Lˉ1 at 30 min, but it was undetectable at any other time. Using a recent and complete PK-PD dataset we are able to show that the measured plasma acetaminophen concentration fits well on PK estimates for acetaminophen in this neonate. The non-detectable (low) plasma acetaminophen concentration at >8 h is also consistent with this model, especially if clearance is slightly increased in the premature nursery graduate. Medical errors are rarely the fault of an individual and they are often due to a combination of factors. Contributing factors, in this case, are described under the following headings: Catalyst event, system fault, loss of situational awareness, and human error.

Interpolation of externally-caused magnetic fields over large sparse arrays using Spherical Elementary Current Systems
S. A. McLay,C. D. Beggan
Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO) , 2010,
Abstract: A physically-based technique for interpolating external magnetic field disturbances across large spatial areas can be achieved with the Spherical Elementary Current System (SECS) method using data from ground-based magnetic observatories. The SECS method represents complex electrical current systems as a simple set of equivalent currents placed at a specific height in the ionosphere. The magnetic field recorded at observatories can be used to invert for the electrical currents, which can subsequently be employed to interpolate or extrapolate the magnetic field across a large area. We show that, in addition to the ionospheric currents, inverting for induced subsurface current systems can result in strong improvements to the estimate of the interpolated magnetic field. We investigate the application of the SECS method at mid- to high geomagnetic latitudes using a series of observatory networks to test the performance of the external field interpolation over large distances. We demonstrate that relatively few observatories are required to produce an estimate that is better than either assuming no external field change or interpolation using latitudinal weighting of data from two other observatories.
Measuring changes in self-concept: a qualitative evaluation of outcome questionnaires in people having acupuncture for their chronic health problems

BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6882-6-7
Abstract: A literature search was followed by an evaluation of three questionnaires: The Wellbeing Questionnaire W-BQ12, the Patient Enablement Instrument (PEI), and the Arizona Integrative Outcome Scale (AIOS). A convenience sample of 23 people completed the questionnaires on two occasions and were interviewed about their experience and their questionnaire responses. All acupuncturists were interviewed.Changes in self-concept were common and emerged over time. The three questionnaires had different strengths and weaknesses in relation to measuring changes in self-concept. The generic AIOS had face validity and was sensitive to changes in self-concept over time, but it lacked specificity. The PEI was sensitive and specific in measuring these changes but had lower acceptability. The sensitivity of the W-BQ12 was affected by initial high scores (ceiling effect) and a shorter timescale but was acceptable and is suitable for repeated administration. The PEI and W-BQ12 questionnaires worked well in combination.Changes in self-concept are important outcomes of complex interventions for people with long-term illness and their measurement requires carefully evaluated tools and long-term follow-up. The literature review and the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the questionnaires is a resource for other researchers. The W-BQ12 and the PEI both proved useful for this population and a larger quantitative study is planned.Relevant, comprehensive, and valid outcome measures are a pre-requisite for all experimental and observational evaluations of healthcare interventions. The choice of outcome measures is especially problematic in evaluating complex interventions, interventions for people with long-term health problems, and interventions that aim to bring about a wide range of treatment effects and behaviour change. In these situations it has been suggested that a staged process of enquiry should be instituted, and that qualitative and theoretical work may play an important part
Clearing a path towards effective alien invasive control: the legal conundrum

Potchefstroom Electronic Law Journal/Potchefstroomse Elektroniese Regsblad , 2006,
Abstract: Alien invasive plants pose significant ecological, social and economic challenges for South Africa. These species threaten South Africa’s rich biodiversity, deplete our scarce water resources, reduce the agricultural potential of land, cause soil erosion and intensify flooding and fires. According to recent estimations, over eight percent of land in South Africa has been invaded by these species and at current rates of expansion their impact could double in the next fifteen years. In an attempt to curb the impending crises, the South African government has promulgated eleven national and various provincial laws which contain mechanisms for regulating the different threats posed by alien invasive plants. Certain of these laws are framework in nature while the majority are sectoral and aimed at regulating these species for one of the following four main purposes: biodiversity conservation; water conservation; agricultural management; and fire risk management. The responsibility for administering these laws spans four national departments, nine provincial environmental authorities, provincial conservation authorities, numerous local and statutory authorities. This fragmented regime, coupled with the adoption of a command and control approach to regulation, has proven inept in effectively regulating the spread of alien invasive plants in South Africa. This reality led the previous Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mr Valli Moosa, to call for the development of a “coherent legislative framework … streamlined along the lines of the principles endorsed by the Convention on Biological Diversity”. This article critically analyses the government’s attempts to develop such a “coherent legislative framework” to regulate alien invasive plants in light of recent legislative reform. It is divided into two parts. Part one critically considers South Africa’s current laws of relevance to alien invasive plants with specific emphasis on their fragmented approach to planning and implementation. Part two provides suggestions on how the current legislative framework can be rationalised to entrench a more integrated, and hopefully successful, approach to the future regulation of alien invasive plants in South Africa.
Pruning the money-tree to ensure sustainable growth: facilitating sustainable development through market-based instruments
AR Paterson
Potchefstroom Electronic Law Journal/Potchefstroomse Elektroniese Regsblad , 2006,
Abstract: South Africa’s pristine landscapes and natural resources are under significant threat. This is not subject to debate, but what is, is how to implement a regulatory regime to deal effectively with these environmental realities – a challenge complicated by competing socio-economic imperatives; significant capacity and resource constraints and the need to redress past inequalities, efforts to increase access to land and natural resources as well as perceptions that the environment is an elitist concern. Many countries are exploring alternative ways of providing for effective environmental management such as: co-opting civil society participation; creating markets for environmental goods and services; and using market-based instruments (MBI). The latter form the focus of this article as the National Treasury recently released a draft policy paper for discussion titled A Framework for Considering Market-Based Instruments to Support Environmental Fiscal Reform in South Africa 2006 (Draft Policy Paper).

Lecturae Tropatorum , 2010,
Abstract: Despite appearing in several editions and interpretations, this piece continues to pose problems. To what poetic genre does it belong? Should it be regarded as ‘fictive’ in some sense? How coherent is it, and to what should be attributed any incoherence? Are the interlocutors married or not? How many ‘dramatis personae’ are involved and who are they? It is argued here that any apparent incoherence derives from the manuscript transmission and the difficulties posed by the unusual vocabulary and popularising register, the narrative situation is simpler than has been previously thought, and wordplay or semantic ambivalence works primarily as humour rather than jongleuresque display. The piece would appear to be designed for performance as a comic sketch, imaginable in dramatised form with appropriate costumes, props and gestures, with the troubadour possibly coming on stage in his own persona as a ‘knight’, being interrupted by a ‘woman’ whose part could have been sung and acted by another man, a woman, or even the troubadour himself. The text may be aptly described as a 'fabliau' in dialogue form.
